As part of a collaboration with the Kitikmeot Heritage Society, Richard Compton was in Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuuttiaq), Nunavut, October 20-29, 2023, working with Inuinnaqtun speakers to draft a community grammar. Inuinnaqtun is a dialect of the Inuit language that is spoken Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuq (Qurluqtuq) in Nunavut, and in Ulukhaktok (Ulukhaqtuuq) in the Northwest Territories.
The meeting included identifying grammatical terminology that community members would find accessible, collecting data on various grammatical phenomena in Inuinnaqtun, and examining points of variation between sub-dialects.
The meeting also served as a reunion for Emily Kudlak and Richard, who co-authored an Inuinnaqtun-English dictionary that was published by Nunavut Arctic College Media in 2018.
